What Is Contrology?

The Original Pilates Method

Before the method became widely known simply as Pilates, Joseph Pilates called his system Contrology.

He described it as:

"Contrology is complete coordination of body, mind, and spirit."

Contrology is a structured, progressive system designed to cultivate deep strength, mobility, stamina, and body control over time. Rather than a generic group fitness class, Contrology is an individualized practice—every client learns their own unique sequence on authentic apparatus, guided by an expert instructor.

How Contrology Works

At Lift Pilates, Contrology isn't just the exercises we teach—it's the way we teach, progress, and develop every client over time.

Individualized Progression

Your Personal Order

You learn a specific order of exercises tailored to your movement patterns, goals, and needs. As your strength, mobility, and memory develop, new exercises and apparatus are layered into your program.

A Complete System

Full Apparatus

Practice isn’t limited to just the Reformer. Contrology uses the full suite of apparatus—Mat, Universal Reformer, Cadillac (Trapeze Table), Wunda Chair, Electric Chair, Pedi-Pole, and Barrels—working together to address your body’s unique needs.

Independent Practice & Expert Guidance

Empowered Movement

You gradually learn your sequence, spring settings, and setup. This fosters deep body awareness, focus, and independence, while your instructor provides continuous feedback, spotting, and precise corrections.

Classical Pilates vs. Contemporary Pilates

Understanding the Difference

Comparison Layout

Classical Contrology (At Lift Pilates)

Systemic Approach

Exercises connect logically across all apparatus to build balanced strength throughout the entire body.

Individualized Focus

Each client follows their personal program at their own pace, tailored to their specific needs and goals.

Original Equipment

Uses authentic apparatus with specific spring tensions and dimensions designed by Joseph Pilates.

Preserves the Art

Taught faithfully according to Joseph Pilates’ original principles, order, and classical lineage.

Contemporary / Fitness Pilates

Disjointed Routines

Workouts change every class, often focusing on isolated muscle burning or novel choreography.

Group Follow-the-Leader

Everyone performs the exact same exercise at the exact same pace, regardless of individual body needs.

Modified Equipment

Uses modern, fitness-focused reformers with lighter or heavier springs and altered proportions.

Hybrid Methods

Blends Pilates with cardio, barre, or strength training trends, shifting away from the core system.

“We don’t change the work; the work changes us.”

— Jay Grimes (First-generation teacher & mentor)
